Step 1.

It is important to know why and when your child turns to his thumb. For the first week, keep a pen and paper and write down every time you see your child's thumb in her mouth. At the end of the week, go to your list and see if there are consistencies.

Do you kid still sucking his thumb around 16 hours while watching his favorite TV show? Does the kid suck his thumb around other young children in daycare because he is nervous or shy?

Step 2.

Identify what the payoff is for your child. For example, if you notice that whenever she gets hurt it sticks his thumb, then a conclusion would be that his thumb to help cope with the pain.

Step 3.

Now that you know for what reason she is using it, you can offer something in exchange for the thumb. For example, if it is about to watch his favorite show, give him a bowl of berries to eat while the program is on.

If he sucks his thumb when he is injured and he just tripped on the stairs, you can rush out and give him a quick distraction as a favorite game or toy.

Step 4.

An array of rewards for a day filled without sucking can be helpful. You can offer your child a treatment or a small toy at the end of the day if it is successful
